Self Tanning FAQ
Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:
Will I turn orange?
This is the biggest question we receive at DeLucca. A self tan will develop slightly differently on each person’s skin according to their own chemistry. A tan will tend towards an orange hue under several circumstance, such as when too much is applied, there is not enough time between successive applications or a product is used that is too dark for a person’s skin tone. Self tans may also develop a yellowish cast when soap is used on the skin, as the alkalinity affects the color. Bear in mind that this is due to traditional soap and not detergent-based cleansing agents.
Will the tan streak or turn out patchy?
Mostly the evenness of a self tan depends on the application, the state of the skin and the conditions of development. If the product is applied carefully and evenly on clean, dry, exfoliated skin, using the after care tips provided in the Sunless How-To, an even tan will result. Skin that has dry patches or is too moist will absorb too much or too little product. This may also happen when following application, a person engages in vigorous exercise, is in a humid area or bathes too soon. Generally, a self tan will take 8 hours to develop fully, and any interference in that time can affect its result.
How much should I apply?
Add your contenIn general, an almond sized amount is sufficient for the face, and an equal amount for the neck and decolette. A peach stone sized amount should be enough to apply for each limb, and an equal amount for the front and back of the body. 1 oz. of product is a good measure for 1 total body application.t here
How often?
To maintain a golden bronze tan, product should be applied every 2-3 days, with gentle exfoliation in between. The gradual sunless gel may be applied daily with no worry of over application. Many people find that their legs and body need reapplication only once a week or every ten days, and the face and arms every 3-5 days. If you are naturally fair, and wish to maintain a darker color, you will reapply more regularly. The tan will also need reapplication for skin that is frequently washed, or for persons who engage in regular aerobic activity.
Can I shower/exercise?
Following the development period, one certainly may. Be advised that showering before 4-6 hours will completely inhibit the self tan reaction.
Are all products suitable for the face?
Each DeLucca product is suitable for face and body, as they are formulated for sensitive and delicate skins, as well as for skin prone to oiliness and breakouts. The self tanning crème is an excellent matte primer base for makeup and sun protection products during daytime use.
Will it smell?
All self tans develop a distinct rust-like odor as they react with the skin. Our products are specifically formulated to reduce that scent, while having a light pleasing fragrance. Each person is different in their physiological makeup, and most will notice no characteristic self tan odor at all.
Will I break out?
As each product has been carefully designed to be non-comedogenic, oil free and skin-calming, it is unlikely that oily or reactive skin types will experience break outs from use. The sunless crème is oil absorbent, with a light matte finish, and the gradual gel is also water based. However, there are some people who are unable to use any type of product with a thicker consistency of a light gel, owing to the excess production of sebum in their skin.
Do I need sunscreen?
At DeLucca, we always advise that skin is protected during daylight hours from the harmful effects of Ultraviolet light. This means that a broad spectrum sun protectant product should be used, with and SPF of 15 or greater. We generally recommend that sensitive and acne prone skin types should choose mineral-based sunscreens containing titanium dioxide/zinc oxide versus chemical sunscreen ingredients.
Do any medications affect the tan?
Medications that increase the cellular turnover of skin such as retinoids, acne medications and hydroxy acid exfoliants will reduce the longevity of a sunless tan. Benzoyl peroxide, a topical disinfectant found in may over the counter and prescription acne treatments will have a bleaching effect on a self tan. More frequent application of sunless tanner may solve this concern.
How to keep the tan looking good?
The best way to maintain the bronze effect is to keep the skin gently hydrated. Light moisturizing agents will increase the lifespan and quality of the tan from day one. Avoid excessive bathing or use of topical exfoliants.
Pregnancy/breastfeeding?
DeLucca is strongly pro-woman and pro-mother, and we believe that every woman should benefit from a boost from her beauty products. We have formulated our products to be safe for pregnant and breast feeding mothers, with no known ingredients of concern. You may find that as your body undergoes the hormonal changes of motherhood, your skin may react differently to products and you may be more sensitive to smells and textures. Each of our products is designed to be pleasant in every way, and to offer a golden bronze boost to your beauty regimen.
